🌋 Aldeyjarfoss Waterfall
🗺️ How to Get There:
From Goðafoss, take Route 842 south for about 40 km. The road eventually becomes F26 (Sprengisandsleið). While the drive is gravel, it’s typically passable by 2WD in summer, but a 4×4 is recommended. There’s a small parking area near the top of the canyon, and it’s just a 5–10 minute walk down to the main viewpoint.
📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Best visited from late June to mid-September, when F-roads are open and the route is clear. Earlier in summer the volume is higher due to snowmelt, while autumn light brings out the basalt textures beautifully. In winter the road is often closed or treacherous, only accesible by superjeep.
📸 Photography Tips:
Best time of day:
Afternoon and evening light hit the falls from the side, creating depth and glow. Overcast days bring out the basalt contrast and water color.
Recommended gear:
Wide-angle lens for full falls and surrounding canyon. Telephoto for compressing the basalt formations or isolating the swirling plunge pool. Tripod and ND filters for long exposure. Drones work well here, open surroundings give plenty of room to maneuver.
Composition ideas:
Shoot from the main cliff viewpoint to capture the full drop framed by basalt columns
Use long exposure to smooth the flow and highlight the circular plunge pool
From a drone, fly slightly downstream to show the falls in context with the highland plateau
Top-down drone shots work well to emphasize the radial symmetry of the canyon
