🌊 Holtsós
🗺️ How to Get There:
Holtsós is located just off the Ring Road (Route 1) between Skógafoss and Vík, near the village of Holt.
There’s no official parking area, but several gravel pullouts along the road near the lagoon provide places to stop. The best drone launch points are close to the Vallnatún farm, but make sure to not enter any private road and be respectful when flying not far from farms and private houses.
📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Accessible year-round, though best for photography from late spring to early autumn when the braided rivers flowing down from Eyjafjallajökull are active and clearly defined.
Summer offers long daylight hours and rich color contrasts. Winter can work too, but conditions are more challenging for drones.
📸 Photography Tips
Best time of day:
Mid-morning or late afternoon for directional light that defines the river textures
Golden hour enhances color contrast between sand, water, and vegetation
Clear calm days ideal for reflections and detail visibility
Recommended gear:
Drone is essential, this location is all about aerial abstraction
ND filters for smoother footage and richer tones
Polarizer (on drone if available) to reduce glare and enhance textures
Composition ideas:
Fly directly overhead for abstract top-down shots of braided river veins
Frame the Eyjafjallajökull glacier in the background with the rivers in the foreground if conditions allow
Capture reflections of mountains or clouds on still water near the edges
Include the nearby coastline if battery allows
