🏔️ Einhyrningur (The Unicorn Mountain)
🗺️ How to Get There:
From Route 1, turn inland at Hvolsvöllur and follow Road 261 toward Fljótshlíð. Continue on to F261 and eventually F210, both 4×4-only highland roads with multiple river crossings, including some that can be deep depending on the season. The mountain is visible from several angles, but the best access is from a side track just south of the Emstrur route. The full road is only suitable for well-equipped 4×4 vehicles with river crossing experience.
📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Accessible for regular 4x4s only in mid-summer (typically late June through early September), when F-roads are open and rivers manageable.
📸 Photography Tips:
Best time of day:
Late afternoon or sunset for warm light hitting the western face. Morning light can work from the east, but conditions vary based on cloud cover.
Recommended gear:
Drone highly recommended to show the mountain’s isolated shape amid vast black sands
Telephoto for compressing the peak against background highlands
Wide-angle for ground-level shots including nearby river curves or sand textures
Composition ideas:
Use the horn-shaped summit as a silhouette during golden hour
Include human or vehicle scale for vastness
