🌋 Tjarnargígur Crater
🗺️ How to Get There:
Located along the F206 mountain road leading to Lakagígar, south of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. To reach it, drive from the village onto F206, which becomes very rough and includes multiple river crossings, only suitable for high-clearance 4×4 vehicles. Tjarnargígur is one of the marked stops along the Laki loop road, with a small pull-out and a short walking path to the crater edge.
📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
Only accessible in summer, typically late June through early September, when F-roads are open. July and August offer the best conditions, with clear trails and vibrant moss.
📸 Photography Tips
Best time of day:
Midday to late afternoon is best when the sun sits higher and enhances the vibrant turquoise color of the lake. Cloudy skies also work well to balance exposure on moss and water.
Recommended gear:
Wide-angle lens to capture the entire crater and surrounding moss
Drone for overhead views of the circular lake and volcanic textures
Polarizing filter to reduce glare on the water and boost colors
Composition ideas:
Shoot from the crater rim, framing the lake with moss-covered lava in the foreground
Drone: use top-down symmetry to emphasize the clean shape of the crater
Include hikers or paths for scale
Capture reflections on calm days, especially during soft evening light
