⛰️ Keilir
🗺️ How to Get There:
From Reykjavík, drive south on Route 41 toward the airport. Just past Vatnsleysuströnd, turn onto the Hafnavegur (road 420) and then onto Keilirvegur (road 428), a gravel road that leads inland toward the mountain. The drive ends at a small parking lot at the base of the trailhead. The road is gravel but passable for 2WD in dry summer conditions, though a 4x4 is recommended for comfort. Hiking to the summit takes about 1.5–2 hours round trip, with some steep sections near the top.
📅 Best Time of the Year to Visit:
June to September offers the safest and most pleasant conditions for hiking, with clear trails and long daylight hours. Spring and autumn can be good too, but weather is more variable. Avoid winter unless experienced and properly equipped.
📸 Photography Tips
Best time of day:
Sunrise or sunset for dramatic light and shadows across the lava fields. Golden hour enhances the pyramid shape and isolation of the peak.
Recommended gear:
Wide-angle lens for landscape context and full view of the cone
Drone works very well here, showind the symmetry of the mountain and surrounding lava textures
Telephoto lens from a distance to isolate Keilir against the sky
Composition ideas:
Frame Keilir with moss-covered lava or dark volcanic plains in the foreground
Use the trail path as a leading line toward the summit
From the top: capture panoramic views of the Reykjanes Peninsula, Snæfellsjökull (on a clear day), and the ocean
Drone: try both centered top-down and side-lighted ridge views
