Big Lake, Big Tours, Big Views, Big Fun!🛥️🏞️

Banff’s largest lake! A summer playground with bright-blue water, history, a sunken ghost town, rugged peaks, hikes, and lots of ways to get out on the lake. Come for a cruise, rent a boat, paddle, hike a short canyon or climb a peak. Then refuel and chill by the shore.

🚗 Directions to Lake Minnewanka: Google Maps

📅 OPERATING SEASON

  • Typically open from May 8 to October 12 (weather dependent)

🛥️ LAKE MINNEWANKA CRUISE

The Lake Minnewanka Cruise offers a guided 1-hour scenic boat tour across Lake Minnewanka, with commentary about wildlife, geology, and the submerged Minnewanka ‘ghost town’. It’s a fun and informative way to take in the surrounding peaks from the water. If you want to book the Lake Minnewanka cruise, you can check availability, pricing and more info here: Lake Minnewanka Cruise

🚤 MOTORBOAT RENTALS

If you prefer to explore on your own, boat rentals are also available. Visitors can rent motorboats from the boathouse by the hour to venture deeper into the lake. Life jackets and safety gear are provided with all rentals as well.

⛰️ HIKING TRAILS

  • Easy: For the hikers coming to the area, there are lots of trails around Lake Minnewanka as well. For easy strolls, you could just wander by the lakeshores, or head up to Stewart Canyon.

  • Moderate: For a moderate trail with some grind to it, C-Level Cirque is a nice trail that climbs the side of Cascade Mountain, giving you a view of the Bow Valley, and all the way down Minnewanka.

  • Hard: If you really want to up the game and do a hard hike. Alymer Lookout has an AMAZING view. It is a huge day though, as well as going through super active bear territory - so much so that during specific seasons you legally need to have a group of x4 people minimum when hiking through (otherwise you will be hit with a $25,000 fine last I checked).

⛸ WILD WINTER SKATING

In the heart of winter, Lake Minnewanka can freeze into a natural rink. Ice conditions can change fast and thickness can vary across the lake, so always check thickness, weather, and advisories before stepping on.

Only skate when conditions are deemed safe. Check advisories, measure at least 15 cm of clear blue ice away from inlets, and never skate alone. If you’re unsure, stay off the ice. You are responsible for your own safety.

BLACK ANCHOR SNACK SHOP

Located near the boat docks, the Black Anchor Snack Shop is a nice stop for a quick bite before you head out on the lake, or even after your hike if you are hungry. Typically, open from late spring to early fall, they offer a bunch of snacks, including sandwiches, ice cream, hot dogs, or hot and cold drinks.

✅ TIPS FROM DEV, LINKS & SAFETY

  • Go early for calmer water, easier parking, and softer light.

  • Weather changes fast on big lakes. Check conditions and carry layers.

  • Cruise seats fill fast in the summer, so I would suggest you book in advance.

  • Only skate when conditions are deemed safe - if you're unsure, stay off the ice. You are responsible for your own safety.
