One of Banff's most iconic viewpoints🚡
Sulphur Mountain is one of Banff’s most iconic spots (and for good reason)! You get endless views of the Bow Valley, Banff's town, and iconic peaks all around like Bourgeau, Cascade, Norquay, the Rundles, and more - All by cheating with a gondola lol!
An absolute must-do though, and its open year-round. The full Sulphur Mountain hike climbs from the gondola base to the summit, but this pin focuses on the short boardwalk trail that starts at the gondola’s peak area, which leads to the historic 'Cosmic Ray Station’.
The boardwalk route here is the easiest way to reach a true summit in Banff without a huge climb or hike. The gondola ride takes you up 700 metres of elevation gain from the base to the summit, which takes you to a total elevation of 2260 metres high. Perfect for casual hikers, families, or people with limited mobility. You get ‘top of the world’ views without the long trek.
Wildlife are often up here too. Birds, squirrels, and Bighorn Sheep can often be seen at the summit. I've seen Bighorn Sheep here a few times from the boardwalk. Makes it easy to get wildlife pictures too, as you are generally safe thanks to the boardwalk railings. Just remember anyway, to always give animals space and watch from a safe distance.

🎉 SUMMIT EVENTS & ENTERTAINMENT
Sulphur Mountain has various seasonal events throughout the year, including stargazing nights, guided astronomy programs, interpretive talks, and live music. Around Christmas and New Year, they also add festive stuff like light shows, themed decorations, and warming stations with hot drinks. Fire pits are lit on cooler nights, creating an awesome alpine atmosphere. For the current event schedule, please check the Banff Gondola site

🍽️ SKY BISTRO
Dinner with a view! I've been here a couple of times, including once for a New Years eve dinner! Rockies-inspired dishes, great wine list for you wine lovers, and full floor to ceiling windows for panorama views while you eat. I would try to book sunset if you can to catch the golden light. Oh, and I highlyyyy recommend the elk bolognaise... it was SO good! It's quite a popular restaurant though and you typically need to book at least a few weeks in advance!

✅ TIPS FROM DEV, LINKS & SAFETY
Icy trail in winter (I highly recommend microspikes).
Altitude may affect some visitors with light-headedness.
Wind exposure and cooler temperatures at the summit (bring a layer - even in summer).
See Parks Canada for the latest National Park trail conditions.
