If you prefer to explore under your own steam, motorized boat rentals are not permitted for the public here, but you can rent those iconic, classic red canoes or kayaks right from the historic boathouse. Paddling all the way to Spirit Island is a serious, full day 28 km round-trip backcountry journey, but even renting a canoe for an hour to explore the home bay is an unforgettable way to experience the turquoise water.

• Book Your Cruise Early: Because this is one of Jasper's premier attractions, boat seats fill up incredibly fast in July and August. Secure your tickets well in advance to get the prime morning departures when the lake is calmest.

• Respect Spirit Island: Spirit Island is a deeply sacred place for the Stoney Nakoda First Nation. While you can walk the boardwalk to view it, stepping directly onto the island itself is strictly forbidden. Please stay on the designated paths.

• Watch for Wildlife on the Drive: The 46 km drive up Maligne Lake Road from Jasper is an absolute hotspot for wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled for moose, grizzly bears, black bears, and bighorn sheep. Drive defensively and never block traffic if you stop to look.

• Pack for Sudden Weather: At an elevation of 1670 meters, Maligne Lake is significantly cooler than the Jasper townsite. The wind blowing off the glaciers at the back of the lake can be biting, even in mid-summer, so always pack a warm jacket and a windbreaker on the boat.
