There are lots of castles in the Lunigiana, and Sarzana is blessed with two of them. One the edge of town is La Cittadella Fortezza Firmafede. A little ways out of town is the Fortezza di Sarzanello.

Sarzana was once an antiques town, but only a few shops remain, the rest being a victim of the big antique fairs hosted by large cities.

Stroll through the streets of town, reading the menus on the restaurants. I haven't had a bad or even mediocre meal in Sarzana; and there are plenty of resturants to choose from.

When it is open, the Basilica Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta is worth a visit. The current building took from 1204 to 1474 build, and in 1735 three statues of popes were added to the top of the façade.

Inside is the Cross of Maestro Guglielmo, dated 1138. It's the oldest example of a monumental painted panel cross we're aware of. This is Jesus as the Christus Triumphans, in which Jesus appears immune to suffering and death.
