Sunrise Hike: PR8 Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço
Start your day with a sunrise hike at Ponta de São Lourenço, a stunning peninsula on the eastern tip of Madeira. This trail is known for its dramatic volcanic cliffs and panoramic ocean views. At sunrise, it’s especially magical as the golden light illuminates the landscape.
Hiking route: PR8 Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço (8 km round trip, moderate difficulty). Note: there is now a small entrance fee!
Where to park: Park at the Baía d’Abra parking lot, located right at the start of the trail. Aim to arrive about 30 minutes before sunrise.
What to expect: The trail is well-marked and mostly exposed, so bring plenty of water and sunscreen. The first half of the walk offers stunning views over both the north and south coasts. Around the halfway point, you can take a break at Casa do Sardinha before heading back.
After the hike, head back to Funchal and take time to explore the island’s lively capital. Stroll through charming streets and colourful markets:
Old Town (Zona Velha): Wander through cobbled streets with street art and cozy cafés.
Mercado dos Lavradores: Visit this vibrant market and sample local products, tropical fruits, and regional specialties.
Monte Cable Car: Take the cable car from the Old Town up to Monte for breathtaking views over Funchal and the coast. Don’t miss the Monte Palace Tropical Garden while you're there.
