One of the most beautiful villages around Rahovec is Hoçë e Madhe, 5 kilometres to the south-east, which really impressed us, as there is so much to see in such a small area.

The Serbian enclave in the middle of vineyards has around 700 inhabitants, before the war there were 2000. Hoçë e Madhe is one of the oldest villages in Metohija, the Serbian tribal leader Stefan Nemanja donated it to the Hilandar monastery (Greece) in 1198. In the Middle Ages, trade relations led to the development of an important economic and spiritual centre with 24 churches and three monasteries, 13 of which have been more or less preserved, some dating back to the 12th century, and three of which are active again. None of them were destroyed during the Kosovo war.

Among the most noteworthy are: The monastery church of St John is located on a hill at the entrance to the village. It dates back to the 13th century and contains valuable frescoes from the 16th century. It was restored in 1975. St Nicholas' Church was built in 1345, and individual fragments of frescoes from this period still exist. Other wall paintings date from the 16th century. The single-nave church is located around 500 metres west of the centre. The church of St. Stephen in the centre with its three-part bell tower is surrounded by high walls. It dates back to the 14th century and its frescoes and icons are exceptionally well preserved.

In addition, there are several listed residential buildings from the 19th century, such as the Kulla of Lazara Kujundžića and the local history museum, as well as the Visoki Dečani monastery estate. Wine for the Dečan region has been produced here for centuries.

In addition to agriculture, viticulture is the most important economic sector. The organic products from the village's own production, such as the home-distilled schnapps that can be bought in the village, are also worthy of special mention. And there are already guesthouses and private accommodations; the Petrović family's winery and hostel are highly recommended – simply but incredibly lovingly furnished, and the food is extremely delicious.
