If you head west from Sheshi Zahir Pajaziti, you will pass the EULEX headquarters and arrive at Ruga Luan Haradinaj. Turn left to see the impressive NEWBORN monument. It was unveiled on 17 February 2008, the day Serbia declared independence, and is one of the city's most important monuments.
The capital letters are each three metres high, 90 centimetres deep and made of 4-millimetre-thick metal plates, weighing a total of 9 tonnes. Production only began nine days before the independence celebrations, as it was unclear for a long time who would cover the costs, but NEWBORN was completed in time. The artist Fisnik Ismaili chose the English words ‘new’ and ‘born’ because they would be understood even by people with little knowledge of English and because the new republic was to be presented as a modern country. An advertising slogan read: ‘NEW life is BORN’, ‘NEW hope is BORN’, ‘NEW future is BORN’ and ‘NEW country is BORN’.
Originally, on the day of its unveiling, the monument was pure yellow and more than 150,000 people left their signatures on it. On its fifth anniversary in 2013, it was given a new look for the first time, with 150 volunteers painting it with the flags of the countries that had already recognised Kosovo, leaving five white spots for the non-recognition of Greece, Slovakia, Romania, Spain and Cyprus. Since then, its appearance has changed regularly. The monument has already won several awards.
