Sheshi Skënderbeu is named after the national hero Skanderbeg, whose equestrian statue dominates the central square. The centre of this popular meeting place is a modern fountain, whose jets are illuminated in colour in the evening and at night, giving the square a special charm.

The Skanderbeg monument was only erected in 2001 and is a copy of the statue in the Albanian city of Kruja. The tall buildings to the left and right behind it are the tax office, the parliament and the new seat of government. The latter originally housed a bank, but was severely damaged in 1999 and had to be completely restored.
