The undisputed landmark of the city, visible from afar, is the Sinan Pasha Mosque. It is also the largest Islamic religious building in the country (until the new mosque in Pristina is completed) and has been a protected cultural monument since 1990. Grand Vizier Sinan Pasha had it built in the center of the old town at the beginning of the 17th century. Some of the stones from the Archangel Church, which was destroyed in the 16th century, were used in its construction, and the walls are 1.65 meters thick. The square floor plan measures 14 meters, and the enormous lead dome, also 14 meters in diameter, is supported by an octagonal tambour. Forty-four windows are distributed over four levels. The minaret, with its lead spire, is 42.5 meters high and is said to be the tallest in the Balkans. The dome and walls inside were not decorated with floral patterns, colorful ornaments, and verses from the Koran until the 19th century. The original vestibule with three domes was destroyed during World War I. Between 2007 and 2011, the building underwent a costly restoration costing 500,000 euros.
