One of my favorite glaciers that is very secret. You will probably not run into anyone and you can get up close and personal with the glacier. There are two ways to reach this spot.

  1. Putting Svínafellsjökull into your google maps and following this road until you reach the end parking lot. Then you will walk for 15-20 minutes to the edge of the glacier. Very easy walk, would not consider this a hike.

  2. Starts in the back of Hotel Skaftafell. This walk is a little longer but beautiful in the summer because the hills are covered with lupines! This view takes you to an overall view and then you can explore closer to the lagoon if you wish. There is a nice loop that takes you through the glacier scenery.

Many movies have been filmed here for example, many scenes from the North Wall Game of Thrones were filmed here, as well as Batman, and Interstellar.

You'll notice that on the left of the glacier it is covered in a lot of rock and rubble. The glaciers have been supporting the mountains for thousands of years and now as they are melting, the mountains are becoming unstable. The mountain next to Svínafellsjökull collapsed at one point onto the glacier and now the glacier carries it down.
