Baruwei Lookout is one of the best sunset spots in Nitmiluk National Park and is a must-do while you’re here. The walk starts from the boat jetty carpark and takes around 15 minutes to reach the top. The track is a bit rocky with some steep stairs towards the end, but it’s short and not too hard.
At the top, you’ll reach a large viewing platform with sweeping views over the river and the rugged cliffs of the gorge. It’s stunning at any time of day, but sunset here is so magical. There’s also plenty of space to explore behind the platform. We followed a faint trail and scrambled over some rocks to find a flat rocky area beneath the palm trees. It ended up being our favourite spot to sit back, relax, and watch the colours shift as the sun dipped.
When we visited, it was overcast and cloudy so we didn’t think we’d get much of a sunset. Most people left once the sun went down but we decided to stay just in case and we were so glad we did. As soon as the sun disappeared below the horizon, the clouds lit up in this incredible display of reds and oranges, and we had the whole place to ourselves. A little tip for sunsets is to always stay a little longer after the sun sets. That’s often when the sky really comes alive.
If you’re planning to fly a drone here, make sure to apply for a permit online in advance. All national parks in the Northern Territory require approval to fly.
