The first time we visited Kings Canyon, we didn’t have time to do the Rim Walk, so we just tackled the South Wall. On our second visit, we finally completed the whole track and oh my goodness, it was worth it! If you have the time, I highly recommend doing the Kings Canyon Rim Walk. This 6km loop takes 3–4 hours to complete, with some steep sections, so bring plenty of water, good shoes, and sun protection. The trail offers countless epic viewpoints and unique stops that will take your breath away. It's best to start early to avoid the heat and catch the sunrise from the first lookout at the domes.

The Rim Walk begins with a climb of around 500 steep steps (the toughest part of the hike). At the top, you’ll find the sandstone domes known as the Lost City, which resemble an ancient walled city. This is a great place to take a break, enjoy the panoramic views, and watch the soft sunrise light up the valley before walking through the domes themselves.

Further along, you’ll cross a metal bridge and descend into the Garden of Eden which is a magical waterhole surrounded by towering red cliffs like a natural amphitheatre. It’s a sacred site, so swimming isn’t allowed, but it’s a beautiful place to take in the stillness.

From here, the trail climbs back up to the rim, looping around to connect with the South Wall. Here you’ll see the other side of the canyon and a sheer vertical drop into the creek below which really puts into perspective just how massive this place really is.

The Rim Walk is filled with constantly changing scenery and incredible views, making it one of our favourite hikes in the Northern Territory. The rock formations, carved over millions of years, are truly magical.

When visiting Watarrka National Park/Kings Canyon, you’ll need a Parks Pass from NT Parks and Wildlife. A day pass costs $10 per person, or you can get a two-week pass for $30. The same pass covers most Northern Territory parks, which is perfect if you’re visiting more than one.
