Perched high on Cape Byron, the Cape Byron Lighthouse is one of the most iconic viewpoints on Australia’s east coast, offering sweeping, uninterrupted views of the coastline in every direction. It’s one of the best places in Byron Bay to catch sunrise, as the lighthouse sits on Australia’s most easterly point, meaning you’ll be among the very first in the country to watch the sun rise over the horizon.
If you’re walking up to the lighthouse, make sure to stop along the way. The coastal track winds past several incredible lookout points, each offering a slightly different perspective of the ocean, beaches, and headlands below. The views on the walk up are just as impressive as the lookout at the top and are well worth taking your time for especially with a camera in hand.
During whale migration season, keep your eyes on the water, as this is one of the best land based whale watching spots in Australia. Humpback whales can often be seen breaching and cruising past the headland between May and November.
There is a $10 parking fee if you choose to park close to the top of the lighthouse. Alternatively, you can park further down the hill for free and enjoy the scenic walk up, which is a great way to soak in the views and experience the area at a slower pace.
