Lake Tyrrell has been on my bucket list for so long, so finally seeing it in person was such a special moment, and it absolutely did not disappoint. We visited at sunset, which is always my favourite time to explore a salt lake. The soft golden light brings out the lake’s beautiful pink hues, and the pastel sky perfectly complements the textures.
The viewing platform offers an incredible vantage point over the lake and its gorgeous white and pink textures. There is a carpark right by the viewing platform. You can also walk out onto the lake and explore the hardened layer of salt on the lakes surface. Just be prepared to get muddy feet as it can be soft in some places.
We were incredibly lucky with the conditions as there was no wind and just enough water to create a dreamy mirror effect across the surface. Salt lakes are always a bit unpredictable and you never really know what you're going to get, but that’s part of the magic and the reason I love photographing them so much. If you're hoping to get similar conditions, check the wind forecast and try visit when there's no wind. To have water in the salt lake you'll need to visit after some light rain. Even if there's no water, the lake will still be pink with unique crystallised patterns. If you’re in the area, I definitely recommend making the trip to Lake Tyrrell.
