If you’re heading out to Kata Tjuta, I highly recommend staying for sunset. It'll be one of the most magical evening views you'll experience. From this viewing area, you’ll get an epic view of Kata Tjuta and all its domes as they light up in an incredible array of colours, shifting as the sun dips lower. The rocks glow a deep, rich red before slowly fading into soft pastel pinks and purples. It’s breathtaking in person, and your photos will turn out beautifully. This ended up being one of my favourite sunsets in Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park, and it felt much quieter and more peaceful than the popular sunset spot at Uluṟu.
The sunset viewing area is an open space with a few picnic tables and benches where you can relax while you wait. I’d suggest arriving about 30 minutes before sunset so you can find the perfect spot and enjoy the colours starting to change.
You’ll need a separate park pass for Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park, as the NT Parks Pass does not cover it. Passes cost $38 per person for three days and can be purchased online before you go or at the entrance gate.
