Yellow Water Cruises is one of the best ways to experience the thriving wildlife and get incredibly close to crocodiles in Kakadu National Park. The cruise takes you along the Yellow Water Billabong, where you’ll spot crocodiles basking along the banks, colourful birdlife in every direction, and the tranquil sounds of nature.
While cruises run throughout the day, I highly recommend booking either the sunrise or sunset tour. We chose the sunset cruise as it fit best with our itinerary, and it ended up being one of our absolute highlights from Kakadu. The stillness of the billabong at sunset was so peaceful, with a soft pink glow lighting up the landscape. As the sun dipped below the horizon, the sounds of nature became the only thing we could hear as it slowly shifted into night.
Right at the end of the tour, we witnessed one of the most unreal views I’ve ever seen. The sky lit up in a fiery orange and pink colour, perfectly reflecting off the glassy water and we spotted the biggest crocodile drifting slowly beside the boat. It was such a surreal moment, and something I’ll never forget.
Sunrise and sunset cruises cost $130 per person and run for approximately 2 hours. The sunrise cruise departs at 6:45am and the sunset cruise at 4:30pm. You’ll need to meet at the Cooinda Lodge Bus Stop at least 20 minutes before departure. The sunset cruise was very popular when we went, with up to five full boats on the water. Once the cruise starts, you’re free to move around the boat to find the best views and photo spots. If you’re after a quieter experience, the sunrise cruise is usually less crowded and just as magical.
