Bitter Springs is hands down one of the best hot springs we’ve come across in Australia. The water clarity here is absolutely unreal, with vibrant blues that make you feel like you’ve stepped into a tropical oasis. The whole place has such a calm and peaceful vibe. The water stays at a beautifully warm 34 degrees year round, making it the perfect spot to float for hours.
Located in Elsey National Park, Bitter Springs is a natural oasis fed by underground springs and surrounded by lush palms. It’s not just a hot spring, it’s a lazy river too. Bring a float or pool noodle if you have one and gently drift down the stream as you soak in the peaceful views. If you’re not a strong swimmer, a float is a must. The water is surprisingly dense and it can get tiring trying to stay afloat without one.
We also recommend bringing a snorkel or goggles so you can dive under and see just how magical it looks beneath the surface.
Mataranka Thermal Pool is located nearby and is another popular option, but we personally preferred Bitter Springs for its more natural setting and secluded feel. Both springs can get very busy, so it’s best to visit early in the morning for a quieter and more relaxing experience.
You’ll need a parks pass for Elsey National Park (and any other NT national park). These can be purchased online and are valid across most Northern Territory parks. A day pass is $10 per person, or you can grab a two-week pass for $30 per person.
If you're planning to bring your drone, make sure to apply for a permit online in advance, as it's required for all NT national parks.
