Fingal Beach is another stunning beach in Port Stephens with amazing views. A unique feature of this beach is the Fingal Spit, which is a sand bank that links the mainland to Fingal Island. You’ll need to time it carefully with the tides since the spit is only accessible at low tide. I've detailed the best times to visit in detail below!
How to get there:
Start at Fingal Beach and park near the Fingal Bay Surf Life Saving Club on Marine Drive. Once you're on the sand, walk left along the beach until you reach the end. You’ll then be able to cross the sand bank with the ocean on either side and explore the island and its secluded beaches.
When to visit:
The conditions at Fingal Spit are constantly changing, so timing your visit right is the key to seeing this place in all its glory. The best times to visit are during summer (Dec - Feb) on a day with low wind, low swell and low tide. You can check all this by searching online. If you want to cross the sand bank, you MUST visit at low tide. When the tide is high, the sand bank is completely covered so access to the island isn't possible. Do not try to attempt to cross if the tide is high as the currents are powerful and there have been some incidents in this area. Also make sure you check the tide times to give yourself enough time to cross back over.
