Moonshadow TQC Cruises is one of the best ways to experience Port Stephens from the water. Whether you're visiting during whale watching season (June to November) or simply want to get out on the bay, they offer a variety of cruises throughout the year, including dolphin watching, whale watching, and scenic harbour cruises.
We joined one of their whale watching tours and had such an incredible experience. The cruise departs from Nelson Bay Marina and heads out through the bay, passing Mount Tomaree and the beautiful offshore islands before reaching the open ocean. The scenery alone makes the trip worthwhile, even before you spot any wildlife.
Once we reached the whales, there was so much activity. We watched humpback whales breaching, tail slapping, and surfacing right beside the boat, which was something we'll never forget. On the way back we also cruised past nearby islands where we spotted seals sunbathing on the rocks.
If you're visiting outside of whale season, their dolphin discovery cruises are just as popular. Port Stephens is home to over 150 resident bottlenose dolphins, so you have a great chance of seeing them all year round while enjoying the beautiful coastline from the water.
The boat is large with two viewing levels, so it never felt crowded and there was plenty of room for everyone to enjoy the views. Whale watching cruises run from June to November and start from around $85 for adults, while dolphin cruises operate year round from around $46 for adults. If you have time for just one tour in Port Stephens, this would be one of my top recommendations.
