Welcome to El Salvador! 😍This is where international travelers and Salvadorans land and start their adventure. Monseñor Óscar Arnulfo Romero International Airport (SAL)

For our map users: this is your primary car rental pickup and drop-off point. If you're booking through Expedia or another provider, selecting the airport as your pickup location is usually the smoothest option. All major rental companies operate directly from the terminal, making arrival and departure easy and efficient.

📍 Location & Distance

The airport is located about 40 minutes from San Salvador (without traffic). However, traffic can be heavy, especially during peak hours, so always allow extra time when heading back for your departure flight.

🚗 Getting to San Salvador

You have three main options:

Rent a car at the airport: Highly recommended if you plan to explore beyond the city (Ruta de las Flores, beaches, mountains, east side of the country, etc.).
Uber: Very convenient and widely used in El Salvador. It’s affordable and reliable for getting to San Salvador or nearby areas.
Private transfer: Some hotels offer this option; prices vary.

If you're planning to move around a lot during your stay, having your own car gives you the most flexibility.

⚠️ Important Entry Requirement

Before flying to El Salvador, make sure you have a return or onward ticket. Airlines may deny boarding if you cannot show this and immigration authorities require proof that you will leave the country (although they have never asked me that).

🛂 What Else to Know

• Immigration is usually straightforward and relatively fast (never have we had long lines there)
• The airport is modern, small and very easy to navigate.
• US dollars (USD) are used in El Salvador
• SIM cards are sometimes available at the airport, but prices are usually cheaper in the city.
