If you ever dreamed of seeing Tokyo’s legendary tuna auctions, this is where it happens now. Toyosu Market took over from the old Tsukiji fish market — cleaner, more modern, but still buzzing with the spirit of Japan’s seafood culture. It’s the beating heart of Tokyo’s sushi world, where the best chefs in the city come before sunrise to bid for the freshest fish in the country.

Inside, the market feels like organized chaos: rows of icy stalls, boxes of gleaming tuna, and forklifts zipping between crates of seafood from all over Japan. Visitors can’t walk inside the wholesale floor, but there are observation deckswhere you can watch the action safely from above — especially the famous tuna auction early in the morning (usually around 5:30–6:30 AM).

After the show, it’s time to eat. The same complex houses a lineup of top-tier sushi restaurants, run by vendors who once worked in Tsukiji. Expect buttery tuna, uni straight from Hokkaido, and sushi that melts the moment it hits your tongue. Lines start early, but the payoff is unforgettable.

Why it’s worth it
Because it’s not just about food — it’s about witnessing the rhythm of Japan’s seafood culture, from the auction floor to your breakfast plate.

🕐 When to go

  • Early morning (5:00–9:00 AM): best for the tuna auction and sushi breakfast.

  • Late morning (10:00–11:00 AM): quieter, easier to stroll through shops.

  • Closed on Sundays and public holidays.

💴 Prices

  • Sushi breakfast: ¥3,000–¥8,000

  • Tuna auction viewing: free (limited spots)

  • Shops and snacks: ¥500–¥2,000

🚆 How to get there
Take the Yurikamome Line to Shijō-mae Station — it’s directly connected to the market via walkways. About 15 min from Shimbashi Station.

🧭 Waldir tip
Go early — really early. Grab a hot coffee, catch the first trains, and aim to be there before 6 AM. After breakfast, stroll along the nearby Toyosu Gururi Park for a calm bay view while the city wakes up.
