Pico Encumeada Alta (Hidden Sunrise Detour on PR1.2)

Most hikers rushing from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo stick to the main PR1 or PR1.2 trail – and they miss this. Just a short detour from the 1.2 to Pico Ruivo path lies Pico Encumeada Alta, a quiet little peak that offers one of my favorite sunrise views on the island.

The best part? While the main trails can be crowded, this spot is usually empty. From here, you look straight across to Pico das Torres and Pico Ruivo

On clear mornings, you can even see Ponta de São Lourenço glowing in the distance and sometimes Porto Santo shimmering on the horizon.

It’s not marked – just a faint track peeling off the main PR1.2 – but if you’re comfortable with a short scramble, it’s 100% worth it. I’ve taken a few sunrise groups here, and every time, they can’t believe how peaceful it feels compared to the main summit. See Maps.me - a short trail leaving to the left from PR 1.2. - after 12 Minutes you leave the official train

Insider Tips

  • Best done if you’re already on the PR1.2 route – allow 10–15 extra minutes.

  • Bring a headlamp if doing for sunrise; the track is narrow and rocky in places.

  • Perfect for drone shots – wide ridge, epic morning light.

  • Combine with sunrise at Pico Ruivo hut for coffee + warm-up.
