One of the most unique experiences you can have in this place is visiting the Spider Monkey Sanctuary, a project dedicated to protecting one of the most endangered animals in Central America.

Hidden within the mangrove forests and tropical vegetation of this biosphere reserve, the sanctuary provides a safe home for rescued Geoffroy’s spider monkeys, many of which were previously kept illegally as pets or lost their natural habitat. Here, conservationists and local caretakers work to rehabilitate the monkeys and give them a chance to live in a protected natural environment.

What makes this place so special is that it’s not a traditional zoo or tourist attraction. Visits are usually small and guided, allowing you to learn about the conservation efforts while observing the monkeys jumping freely between the trees above the canals and mangroves of the bay.

Bahía de Jiquilisco itself is one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in El Salvador, known for its mangroves, birdlife, and marine wildlife. Visiting the monkey sanctuary offers a rare opportunity to experience this incredible natural environment while supporting an initiative that helps protect one of the country’s most fascinating species.
