Close to Port McNeill's waterfront area is one of two local 'World's Largest Burl' sites. A tree burl is an abnormal swelling of wood usually found on bark or branches.

The Burl in Port McNeill is the largest and was found on a 500-year-old Sitka Spruce tree near Holberg in 2005. Unfortunately, the 30-tonne and 6m wide 'Ronning Burl' was accidently set alight in May 2023 so it now looks a little charred.

It is still worth a quick stop while in the area. It's hard to imagine that this huge burl was ever on a tree!
