If you’re starting the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route from the Toyama side, Tateyama Station is your gateway. This side of the route allows you to experience a gradual ascent, starting from lower elevations and reaching the scenic Murodo Plateau. Using public transportation is ideal, as it allows you to cross from Toyama to Nagano without backtracking, saving time and giving you a more seamless experience.

  1. From Toyama Station:

    • The Toyama Chiho Railway offers a direct line from Toyama Station to Tateyama Station, taking approximately 1 hour. This is the most convenient option for starting the Alpine Route from the Toyama side.

    • Timetables and Tickets: Regular services run frequently, but check the timetable, especially during the Alpine Route’s peak season (mid-April to November).

    • Toyama Chiho Railway Info: Toyama Chiho Railway Website

  2. From Tokyo:

    • Take the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo to Toyama Station, approximately a 2-hour journey. From there, transfer to the Toyama Chiho Railway to Tateyama Station. This combination offers efficient travel and a beautiful way to enter the Alpine Route from the Toyama side.

  3. From Osaka and Kyoto:

    • The Thunderbird Express travels to Kanazawa, where you can transfer to the Hokuriku Shinkansen to reach Toyama Station. Then, follow the route from Toyama Station on the Toyama Chiho Railway.

Important Tips

  • Seasonal Operation: The Alpine Route operates mid-April to November, depending on weather. Always check the seasonal schedule.

  • No Private Cars: Personal vehicles aren’t permitted on most sections of the Alpine Route. Public transportation options, including trains, cable cars, and buses, are essential for all sections beyond Ogizawa and Tateyama.
