Although there is a ropeway that takes you near the summit, I highly recommend skipping it to fully experience the scenic and adventurous hike from the base. The hiking trail winds through beautiful forested areas and passes by significant landmarks such as the Nihon-ji Temple, home to one of Japan's largest Buddha statues. The hike takes roughly 1-2 hours, depending on your pace, and is moderately challenging with steep stairs and rocky sections.

Fees and Entry

Once you approach the summit area, there's a ¥700 fee to access the viewing platforms and summit areas, including the iconic “Jigoku Nozoki” (Hell's View), which is a rock outcropping that offers incredible, but vertigo-inducing, views over the cliff. This spot is extremely popular, so be prepared for a line if you want a photo at the edge.

Highlights

  • Nihon-ji Daibutsu: A colossal Buddha statue carved into the mountain, one of the largest of its kind in Japan.

  • Hyaku-shaku Kannon: A magnificent relief carving of Kannon, the Buddhist deity of compassion, set into a cliff wall.

  • Hell's View (Jigoku Nozoki): A thrilling photo spot that juts out over the edge of the mountain, providing panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and Tokyo Bay on clear days. Expect a line at Hell’s View photo spot, especially on weekends and holidays, so plan accordingly for timing and patience.

Access

To reach Nokogiriyama without the ropeway:

  1. By Train: Take the JR Uchibo Line to Hama-Kanaya Station. From the station, the trailhead is about a 10-minute walk away.

  2. By Car: Paid parking is available near the trail entrance if you're driving.
