Hikawa Gorge

Directions

This gorge is located just a short walk from Okutama station and as we went on a cloudy day, it felt very moody Ghibli vibes with mossy rocks and blue-green water. We walked across a couple of suspension bridges you can easily wander across and look down at the Tama River below. It felt like the mix of urban Japan and nature that Ghibli movies so often blend together in their beautiful animated landscapes. We walked along the walking trail heading towards the Atago Shrine which we've mentioned in another post (it's not too well signposted so just make sure you turn left after you cross the first suspension bridge).

Important: we've seen on social media people recommending going down to swim in the river, but when we visited there were signs forbidding this due to safety reasons with cones blocking the way down. So please bare that in mind when visiting :)
