This short walk goes around the Tannensee lake at the Melchsee-Frutt mountain resort. This easy obstacle-free path is a good choice for families with little kids and those with limited mobility.

Trail: Easy • 40 mins • 2 km • 10m up, 20m down • trail map.

Open: usually third week of June to mid October. Check status.

Website: www.melchsee-frutt.chwebcam

The scenery is spectacular with both near and far dramatic peaks, two super blue lakes, rolling grassy hills, and plenty of cows to befriend. The path is wide dirt path, possible with an all-terrain stroller.

How to get there

The Melchsee Frutt mountain area is accessed by the Stockalp-Melchsee Frutt gondola.

By car: Stöckalp, 6067 Melchtal. There is parking next to the gondola station.

By public transport: Train to Sarnen, then a bus to Stöckalp. The bus drops off at the cable car station. From Lucerne 1hr10.

Tickets: If you are using the gondola and the Frutt train shuttle, get the "day ticket" which includes both.

Option 1: Short Walk

From the top of the gondola, ride the "Frutt-Zug" shuttle to the Fachshubel stop (one stop before the end at Tannalp). The walk starts here.

At the end of your walk, catch the shuttle at the Tannendamm stop and ride back to the gondola station.

For a longer walk, skip the shuttle and just walk back to the Melchsee lake, about 30 mins.

Option 2: Both lakes + shuttle

From the top of the gondola, first walk to the Panoramalift and ride the lift down to the Melchsee lake.

Walk along the lake to the cute chapel, passing a play area on the way.

At the church, catch the shuttle at the Kappelle stop and then ride out to Tannalp for the second lake. Or keep walking on the road to the Tannensee lake, about 30 mins.

For lunch, keep walking past the Tannensee lake about 8 min to the Tannalp guesthouse. Then ride the Frutt shuttle back to the gondola station.

Option 3: Skip the shuttle

If you want to skip the shuttle, you can do a loop, walking out to the Tannensee lake along the road, and looping back on the trail described above.

This takes about 1 hour to reach the Tannensee lake, total of about 3 hours for the full loop. See trail map.
