Capelinhos is a volcano that erupted for 13 months between 1957 and 1958. The eruption nearly buried the lighthouse, covering it with debris up to the top. Today, you can visit the lighthouse and explore the museum located below it. A moderate hike nearby offers a great vantage point for viewing the area. One of the main attractions is a small swimming hole with a diving board, perfect for snorkeling. Remember to bring a large towel, as the rocks can get very hot. There is also an outdoor shower available for use.
Fun Fact: While driving down to the swimming hole, look to the left, and you'll spot the rooftops of homes that were evacuated during the eruption. Look closely!
