The Gorges du Verdon is one of the most spectacular natural landscapes in France, often described as Europe’s answer to the Grand Canyon.

Carved over time by the Verdon River, the canyon stretches for around 25 km, with cliffs dropping up to 700 meters into vivid blue and turquoise waters below. The contrast between limestone rock and the river’s color creates some of the most striking scenery in Provence.

This is not just a viewpoint destination. The area offers a wide range of experiences, from scenic drives along the Corniche routes to hiking trails, kayaking, rock climbing, and whitewater rafting.

At the western end, the river opens into the Lac de Sainte-Croix, where the water becomes calm and perfect for swimming or paddle boating. On the eastern side, Castellane serves as a base for more adventurous activities.

Exploring the gorge properly takes time. The full drive around the canyon can easily fill a day, with multiple stops for viewpoints and short walks.

👉 Local Tip: Start early and pick one side of the gorge instead of trying to do everything. The distances and winding roads take longer than expected.
