Stone walls, silence, and rows of lavender create one of the most recognizable landscapes in Provence. Even before stepping inside, the setting already leaves a strong impression.

The Abbaye Notre-Dame de Sénanque, located near Gordes in the Vaucluse, is a 12th-century Cistercian monastery still inhabited by a small community of monks. Founded in 1148, it is one of the “three Provençal sisters” alongside Silvacane and Le Thoronet, reflecting the influence of Cistercian architecture in the region.

The abbey stands in a narrow valley shaped by the Sénancole stream, where its simple Romanesque design follows strict monastic principles of austerity and harmony. Inside, you’ll find the church, cloister, chapter house, and former dormitories, all built with clean lines and minimal decoration.

Outside, the surrounding lavender fields have become one of the most photographed scenes in Provence, especially in summer. Yet beyond the images, the site still functions as a living monastery, where prayer, work, and silence structure daily life.

👉 Local Tip: Visit early in the morning or late in the day to avoid crowds and tour buses. For photos, walk up the road above the abbey for a higher viewpoint instead of staying at the main entrance.
