What to expect:

The Aareschlucht is one of Switzerland’s most impressive natural wonders 🌊⛰️
Walking through this dramatic limestone gorge feels like stepping into another world with the powerful turquoise Aare River rushing far below and towering rock walls rising on both sides.

A network of safe wooden walkways leads you directly through the narrow canyon. The whole walk takes about 40–50 minutes, but you’ll likely stop often bc every corner looks unreal. Light filters through the cliffs in a way that makes the water glow even more vividly.

Despite its dramatic scenery, the gorge is very well maintained and accessible, making it suitable for almost all ages. It’s an easy, unforgettable experience rather than a demanding hike.

Both entrances are easy to reach 🚗🚆
The West entrance near Innertkirchen offers the most parking, plus restaurant, playground, and gift shop. (It's the one we took)

📍From Zurich: around 1.5–2 hours drive

By public transport:
Train to Meiringen, then bus to either entrance (Meiringen or Innertkirchen).

Notes:

Along the way, there’s the “Tatzi” themed trail (Tatzelwurm path), where children can search for the hidden Tatzelwurm family members and answer little quiz questions on a competition card. It’s playful, interactive, and keeps kids between about 4–10 years fully entertained while you walk through the gorge.

– Stroller: technically possible but quite narrow

– Restaurant on site (but quite expensive - better bring a picnic as we did 🧺)

– Can get busy at peak times, go early for a calmer experience
