I didn’t visit this one myself, but from everything I’ve read, Skippers Canyon Road is easily one of the sketchiest drives in the country. It’s an old mining road carved into the cliffs over 140 years ago, and it seriously hasn’t changed much.

The road is super narrow, unsealed, and clings to the edge of massive drop-offs with zero guardrails. It’s beautiful, but hectic definitely not something I’d recommend unless you’re super confident driving in those conditions. It’s also a 4WD track, so don’t even think about taking a regular rental, especially since most rental insurance won’t cover you here anyway.

If you do decide to take it on, make sure the weather’s good and take it slow. The lookout points over the Shotover River are meant to be next level, but yeah... this one’s for the brave!
