Central Nagano is often overlooked by travelers rushing toward Zenkoji Temple or the snowier corners of the prefecture—but if you slow down, you’ll find it’s full of low-key charm and surprises. The area blends spiritual depth, everyday local life, and a few hidden spots you’d never expect in the middle of a city.
It’s compact and easy to explore on foot, with a mix of history, traditional crafts and nostalgic alleys. Whether you're stopping by or spending the day, central Nagano has more than enough to make the visit worthwhile.
Recommended arrival time at the first location: 9:00 AM
Quick summary of the day:
Start the day with a peaceful pilgrimage through local neighborhoods and quiet temples, collecting stamps from the Seven Lucky Gods
Discover quiet temples and lesser-known historical spots
Explore hidden alleys, unique shops, and local flavors
Take breaks at peaceful cafés and unexpected stops with character
Wrap it up with a visit to an onsen, if you’re up for it
Notes about restaurants:
Everyone will be going through this route with their own pace, so to make things convenient, I've set up all of the recommended restaurants all along the path, so that you could choose one whenever you feel hungry.
NOTE: We’ll be skipping the “how to get there” section in this itinerary, since everything takes place in central Nagano. I’m assuming most people will either be staying nearby or starting their day from Nagano Station—so we’ll jump straight into the first location.
