Mud Volcano is one of the most unique geothermal areas in Yellowstone and, believe it or not, it’s my oldest son’s favorite stop in the entire park. There’s just something about the bubbling mud pots, steaming vents, and the smell of sulfur that makes it feel like you’re walking through another world. Every time we visit, this is one place he always asks to stop.
As you follow the boardwalk, you’ll pass bubbling mud pots, Dragon’s Mouth Spring, Black Dragon’s Cauldron, and several steaming fumaroles. Dragon’s Mouth Spring is a must-see. Water crashes inside a cave-like opening, creating a deep rumbling sound that really does resemble a dragon breathing.
Trail Details
• Distance: 0.8 miles round trip
• Elevation Gain: About 150 feet
• Trail Type: Loop
• Average Time: 30 to 45 minutes
• Difficulty: Easy to Moderate
There are a few short but fairly steep hills and stairs along the loop, but most visitors can complete it without much difficulty.
Tips:
• Don’t skip Dragon’s Mouth Spring. It’s one of the most impressive features in the area.
• Be prepared for the strong sulfur smell. Some people love it, while others don’t.
• Wear comfortable shoes since there are a few uphill sections and stairs.
• Restrooms are available near the parking area.
• Stay on the boardwalk at all times. The ground around the thermal features is extremely hot and fragile.
Family Friendly: Yes. While there are a few hills and stairs, most families can comfortably complete the loop. Kids especially love watching the bubbling mud pots and hearing Dragon’s Mouth Spring roar, which is exactly why it’s become my oldest son’s favorite stop in Yellowstone.
