Old Faithful is Yellowstone’s most famous attraction and one of the most predictable geysers in the world. Watching thousands of gallons of steaming water shoot into the air is something every first-time visitor should experience at least once. Even if you’ve seen photos or videos, it’s much more impressive in person.

The National Park Service predicts eruption times throughout the day, making it easy to plan your visit without waiting for hours. Before exploring the area, check the posted prediction so you can time your walk around the eruption.

Trail Details
• Distance: 1 to 3 miles, depending on how much of the boardwalk system you explore
• Elevation Gain: Minimal
• Trail Type: Loop and out-and-back boardwalks
• Average Time: 1.5 to 3 hours
• Difficulty: Easy

Beyond Old Faithful itself, don’t miss the surrounding Upper Geyser Basin. It’s home to the largest concentration of geysers in the world, with colorful hot springs, steaming vents, and dozens of named geysers along an easy boardwalk system. If you have the time, this area is absolutely worth exploring.

Tips:
• Check the predicted eruption time as soon as you arrive so you can plan your visit.
• Arrive 15 to 20 minutes before the predicted eruption if you want a good seat.
• Explore the Upper Geyser Basin while you wait instead of sitting on the benches the whole time.
• Restrooms, restaurants, a visitor center, gift shops, lodging, and a general store are all located nearby.
• Parking fills quickly during the middle of the day, so arrive early if possible.

Family Friendly: Yes. This is one of the best stops in Yellowstone for families. The boardwalks are easy to walk, there are plenty of amenities nearby, and kids love watching the geyser erupt. If little legs get tired, you can easily shorten your walk and still have an incredible experience.
