Hayden Valley is one of the best places in Yellowstone to watch wildlife. If seeing animals is at the top of your list, this is a stop you won’t want to miss. The wide-open valley gives you a chance to spot wildlife across the landscape, especially during the early morning and evening when animals are most active.

This is also one of the best places in the park to look for wolves. While wolf sightings are possible, they are usually far from the road, so you’ll have the best chance if you bring a spotting scope or high-powered binoculars.

Bison are almost always found throughout the valley, and it’s common to see large herds grazing near or even on the road. We’ve also seen elk, coyotes, bears, bald eagles, sandhill cranes, trumpeter swans, and a variety of waterfowl here. During the spring and fall, bears are often more active, and with a little luck, you may even spot one close to the road.

There isn’t a trail here. Instead, you’ll spend your time driving through the valley and stopping at the pullouts to scan for wildlife. Plan to spend at least 30 to 60 minutes, but if the animals are active, it’s easy to stay much longer.

Tips:
• Visit around sunrise or sunset for your best chance at seeing wildlife.
• Bring a spotting scope or binoculars if you’re hoping to see wolves.
• Pull completely off the road at designated pullouts and never stop in the travel lane.
• Stay at least 100 yards away from bears and wolves, and 25 yards away from all other wildlife, including bison and elk.
• Be patient. Sometimes wildlife appears within minutes, while other times it takes a while.

Family Friendly: Yes. Hayden Valley is perfect for families because most wildlife viewing can be done right from the roadside pullouts. Kids love watching the bison, and if you’re lucky enough to spot wolves or bears through a spotting scope, it’s an experience they’ll never forget.
