Fountain Paint Pot is one of my favorite geothermal areas in Yellowstone because you get to see so many different types of thermal features in one short walk. Along the trail you’ll see bubbling mud pots, steaming fumaroles, colorful hot springs, and active geysers, making it one of the best places to experience Yellowstone’s volcanic landscape without spending hours hiking.

If you’re short on time and can only visit a few geyser basins, I’d put this one near the top of the list.

The boardwalk is mostly flat and easy to walk, making it a great stop for visitors of all ages.

Tips:

• Visit in the morning or evening for cooler temperatures and fewer crowds.

• Parking can fill quickly between late morning and mid-afternoon during the summer.

• Restrooms are available at the parking area.

• Stay on the boardwalk at all times. The ground around the thermal features is extremely hot and fragile.

• Take your time at the mud pots. They’re constantly bubbling and changing, and no two visits are exactly the same.

Family Friendly: Yes. This is one of the best geothermal stops in Yellowstone for families. The short, easy boardwalk is perfect for kids, and there are enough bubbling, steaming, and erupting features to keep them interested the entire walk.
