Norris Geyser Basin is Yellowstone’s hottest and most dynamic thermal area. Unlike many of the park’s other geyser basins, the landscape here is constantly changing as geysers erupt, vents open, and hot springs shift over time. If you want to see Yellowstone’s geothermal power at its most active, this is a must-visit.
The basin is divided into two areas: Porcelain Basin and Back Basin. Porcelain Basin features a wide-open landscape filled with colorful hot springs, steaming vents, and bubbling pools, while Back Basin takes you through a forested boardwalk to famous features like Steamboat Geyser, the world’s tallest active geyser.
Trail Details
• Distance: Up to 2.9 miles if you explore both Porcelain Basin and Back Basin
• Elevation Gain: Minimal, with a few gentle inclines
• Trail Type: Loop boardwalks
• Average Time: 1.5 to 2.5 hours to explore both sections
• Difficulty: Easy
You can choose to visit just one section if you’re short on time, but I highly recommend exploring both since each offers a completely different experience.
Tips:
• Don’t expect to see Steamboat Geyser erupt. It has no predictable schedule, but it’s still impressive to see.
• Start with Porcelain Basin if you’re limited on time. It’s more open and showcases a wide variety of thermal features.
• Stay on the boardwalks at all times. The ground beneath you is extremely hot and fragile.
• Restrooms, a visitor center, water, and parking are available at the trailhead.
• Arrive early or later in the afternoon during summer, as parking fills quickly.
Family Friendly: Yes. The boardwalks make this one of the easiest geothermal areas to explore with kids. There isn’t much elevation gain, and there are plenty of interesting features to keep children engaged. If you have younger kids, you can easily shorten your visit by exploring only one basin.
