Mokoroa Falls is a beautiful natural site located in between Muriwai and the Waitākere Ranges, near Auckland in New Zealand. Nestled within the Goldie Bush Scenic Reserve, the falls, with its picturesque pool beneath, is an amazing sight to behold. According to Te Kawerau ā Maki iwi, this ancient waterfall was traditionally known as Wairere. The name Mokoroa, meaning "long lizard", was originally given to the taniwha, Te Mokoroa, that inhabited the falls. There are also folk tales about ancestor Taiaoroa setting out to kill the creature. Owing to Kauri Dieback disease, the track leading to the falls had been closed for some time, however with recent redevelopment works underway it promises to be even more impressive than before. It is the perfect place to take in all the natural beauty of New Zealand's west coast.
