The most iconic maunga in Auckland. Accessible for day trips via ferry.

Further information: Rangitoto Island is a must-visit destination for all adventure seekers! Located off the eastern coast of Auckland in New Zealand, the 5.5 km wide Island is home to a shield volcano and symmetrical scoria cones. With a peak height of 260 m above sea level, Rangitoto has been designated a Māori reserve by the local iwi, with many believing it to be an active volcano (although recent research suggests otherwise). There is plenty to explore on the island, with dense forests of pohutukawa trees, lava tubes, over 200 species of trees and flowers, and even the remnants of an ancient battle fought between two iwi centuries ago. For nature lovers, hikers and beach-goers alike, a trip to this volcanic paradise is sure to make your next vacation unforgettable!
