The Te Pōrere Redoubt is an important historical site located off SH 47, about 25 km from National Park Village. It was the last major fixed battle of the New Zealand Wars and is now a Category 1 Historic Place. The redoubt itself is made up of two sets of fortifications, both with interesting features such as flanking angles and trenches, making it a great spot for exploration. It was at Te Pōrere Redoubt that famed Māori leader Te Kooti made his last stand in the New Zealand Wars - a truly remarkable piece of history! Today visitors can explore this important location, learning more about its cultural significance along the way, and gaining a better understanding of New Zealand's past and present.
