Moeraki Boulders Beach is truly a sight to behold. Located on the North Otago coast, this beach features large spherical stones scattered across its sandy shores. These mysterious boulders are up to two metres high and weigh several tonnes each. Mysteries abound in Moeraki, with scientists conditionally attributing the boulders' formation to calcite concretions about 65 million years ago, while Maori legend holds that the boulders were washed ashore from the great voyaging canoe Araiteuru, many centuries ago. Koekohe Beach, between Moeraki and Hampden, can be easily accessed via State Highway 1 from either direction. The scenic drive is worth it alone, for few places match the captivating beauty of Moeraki Boulders Beach.
