One of Tokyo's oldest shrines, dating back 1,900 years, features a lush hillside of thousands of blooming azaleas in late April and a picturesque tunnel of vermilion torii gates. The azalea festival draws crowds, but the tunnel of gates rivals Kyoto's Fushimi Inari for beauty while remaining much less crowded year-round. The architecture is stunning, having survived both the Great Kanto Earthquake and World War II intact.
