As Peak District walks go this is one of quickest, but what it lacks in length it more than makes up for in beauty.
Chrome Hill, is perhaps more commonly known as the Dragon's Back, a name that will make sense the moment you lock eyes on this unique part of the country. Shaped like the spine of a sleeping dragon, the hill is located in Staffordshire and offers a variety of walks, the shortest of which is 4.5 miles and was the one we tackled as we were with Sonny who was 1 at the time.
This walk starts in the nearby hamlet of Hollinsclough, where is there are a few places to park. However do be careful where you park as its only a small place and so can get overwhelmed with cars very easily, we went on a weekday morning out of season and so it was fine, but if you're there at peak time it might be you have to start your walk from nearby Longor. Hollinsclough is also home to a small tearooms in the chapel, selling tea, scones, snacks and cold drinks, making it a good place to stop pre or post walk for a quick bit of energy. However if you want something more substantial, again you'll have to head to Longor.
Right that's boring logistics out the way, now for the good part - the walk.. well, its a very easy to follow route that takes you alongside a stream, past a farm, before landing oyu at the foot of the hills where you are faced with a choice of climbing Chrome Hill or the adjacent Parkhouse Hill... or both! We decided to climb Parkhouse so that we had views back over the iconic Dragon's Back. At the top we stopped and took in the views for a good half an hour or so. From here you're able to continue your walk onwards, turn back and climb Chrome Hill or head back to the start.. the choice is yours!
It was a bang average day weather-wise and the experience still managed to be pretty spectacular!
